Matthew 24:36 can therefore speak of Christ according to the humanity He truly assumed without requiring His divine nature to lack knowledge. However, that is only the first part of the answer. Matthew’s own context shows that the passage is also about who holds authority over the timing and who is being given that knowledge. After saying “nor the Son,” Jesus repeatedly tells His followers, “you do not know what day your Lord is coming” (Matt 24:42) and “the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (24:44). Then, in the very next section of the same discourse, Jesus presents Himself as the Bridegroom whose arrival everyone is waiting for (Matt 25:1–13). He is the Bridegroom who comes; they are the ones waiting without knowing the hour. Early Christians such as Athanasius noticed this connection as well. He argued that the limitation belongs to the humanity Christ genuinely assumed rather than to the Godhead — the flesh was truly His own, so Scripture can speak of Him in its terms without reducing the Word who knows all things. And the point of the Bridegroom picture is not that Jesus is a helpless observer waiting to discover the date, but that His followers do not know when He will arrive and therefore must remain ready. Furthermore, this is reinforced by Acts 1:7. When the disciples later ask Jesus about the timing again, He tells them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.” The Father holds authority over the appointed time, the Son is the Bridegroom who comes, and the timing is not revealed to His followers. These pieces build on one another: Jesus truly assumed a human nature with real human limitations, while as the eternal Son He knows His own coming; the Father holds authority over the appointed time, and that time was not given to the disciples to know. The repeated warning is ultimately directed at us: we do not know when the Bridegroom is coming, so we must be ready.

Philippians 2 describes the same movement: Christ existed “in the form of God,” yet willingly took the form of a servant and humbled Himself. The Father’s “greater” position can therefore include order and authority within Christ’s mission: the Father sends, and the Son willingly carries out the work He was sent to accomplish. Historic Christianity has recognized this order without treating the Son as less divine. Difference in role or relation does not mean difference in divine nature. Furthermore, the rest of Scripture rules out the idea that Jesus is calling Himself a lesser kind of divine being. The Son is to be honored “just as” the Father is honored (John 5:23), Jesus says “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30), and He speaks of the glory He shared with the Father before the world existed (John 17:5). Colossians itself then tells us how to understand the title. Immediately after calling Jesus “the firstborn of all creation,” Paul says that all things were created through Him and for Him, whether in heaven or on earth, visible or invisible. He then adds, “He is before all things.” Paul is not describing Jesus as the first thing God created, but as the One who stands over creation and through whom creation came to exist. The rest of the Gospel makes the picture even clearer. John opens by saying “the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1), then identifies this Word as the One who “became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14), with the passage explicitly naming Jesus Christ a few verses later (John 1:17). The Old Testament repeatedly insists that there is only one God, while at the same time containing passages that hint at plurality within God’s identity and activity. God speaks as “Us,” the Angel of the LORD is distinguished from God yet identified with Him, and some passages place divine figures alongside one another. These passages do not give a full doctrine of the Trinity, but they provide an important backdrop for what becomes much clearer in the New Testament. The earliest Christians continued to confess the one God of Israel while the New Testament repeatedly places the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit together in baptism, worship, salvation, prayer, and the life of the church. In the final phrase, “the Word was God,” the word for God does not have the Greek word for “the” in front of it. Jehovah’s Witnesses argue that it should therefore be translated “a god.” However, there is an important problem for the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ NWT translation: Greek does not have a word equivalent to the English “a” or “an.” So John did not write “the Word was a god.” The translator has to decide from the grammar and context whether an English “a” belongs there. Simply noticing that “the” is missing does not settle the question. So what does the context tell us? John immediately says that “all things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3). That creates a very simple distinction: - Everything that was made came into existence through the Word. - The Word is the One through whom those things came into existence. If the Word were Himself a created being, He would belong among the things that “were made.” Instead, John places Him on the other side of that distinction as the One through whom everything made came to be. But neither point requires them to be the same person. Let’s start with what 1 Thessalonians 4:16 actually says. Jesus descends “with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God.” The verse describes what accompanies Christ’s return; it never says “Jesus is the archangel Michael.” Even if the “archangel’s voice” refers to Jesus’ own commanding voice, having such a voice does not by itself identify Him as an archangel. The verse does not even name Michael. By the same logic, the verse would also make Jesus “the trumpet of God,” since His return is said to be “with the sound of the trumpet of God.” The passage is describing what accompanies His coming, not giving a list of identities. In contrast, Hebrews 1 gives us a direct comparison between Jesus and the angels. God asks, “To which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son’?” (Hebrews 1:5). The answer is none. The chapter then says of the Son, “Let all God’s angels worship him” (1:6), and later asks again, “To which of the angels has he ever said, ‘Sit at my right hand’?” (1:13). Hebrews is not describing Jesus as the greatest angel. It repeatedly distinguishes the Son from the angels themselves: the angels worship Him, and He receives a position and honor that God explicitly says He has given to no angel. Hebrews goes even further by applying Creator language directly to the Son: “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands” (Hebrews 1:10–12). Jesus is therefore not merely placed above the angels; He is identified with the work of creation itself, something Scripture attributes to God alone. Michael, meanwhile, is described very differently. Daniel 10:13 calls him “one of the chief princes,” placing him among other heavenly princes. Jude 9 explicitly calls him “Michael the archangel,” and when confronting the devil he says, “The Lord rebuke you.” Michael is presented as a powerful heavenly servant who appeals to the Lord’s authority. Jehovah’s Witnesses also point out that Revelation speaks of “Michael and his angels” while other passages speak of Jesus coming with His angels. But sharing authority over angels does not make two figures the same person. The question is whether every detail of this poetic description should therefore be read as a literal statement about Jesus and His origin. The surrounding context shows why that is a problem. Proverbs personifies Wisdom as a woman who speaks, calls out in the streets, stands beside God at creation, and later “builds her house” (Proverbs 9:1). The same section personifies Folly as another woman (9:13–18). No one concludes from this that Jesus is literally a woman who built a house. Proverbs is using poetic personification to communicate truths about Wisdom. When the full context is taken into account, the picture is not of an inferior Son being put in His place, but of the victorious Son completing the work He came to accomplish and presenting the kingdom to the Father. Every opposing power has been defeated, even death itself, and Christ’s reign has reached its appointed goal. Paul’s own words elsewhere in the same letter make it difficult to read that submission as proof that Jesus is a lesser divine being. In 1 Corinthians 8:6 he writes that there is “one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.” The same Paul who speaks of the Son’s submission also places Him in the work through which all things exist. That fits an important distinction found throughout historic Christian teaching: equality in divine nature does not erase the personal distinction between the Father and the Son, or the order of the mission He was sent to accomplish. Only eight verses later, Thomas looks directly at the risen Jesus and says, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). Jesus accepts the confession rather than correcting him.
